CLX: 1024 nuovi processori!

Da questo momento CLX ha altri 128 nodi (256 CPU) - ed ha raggiunto la
dimensione di 1024 processori.

I nuovi processori (detti Nocona) sono ~30% piu' veloci dei precedenti,
sebbene abbiano un clock leggermente piu' modesto (3.000 vs 3.055)
perche' la frequenza del "front side bus" e' 800 MHz invece di 533 come
nei precedenti.

Per questa ragione potreste osservare inaspettate "velocizzazioni" nelle
applicazioni. Non riteniamo che possano pero' esserci dei rallentamenti
nel "mischiare" i nuovi con i vecchi.

D'altronde, se necessitate di effettuare benchmark precisi, e'
importante sapere quale tipo di CPU si sta utilizzando. A tal fine
abbiamo definito i "node type":

fsb533   per i vecchi nodi
fsb800   per i nuovi Nocona

Solo ai fini dei benchmark quindi, potete richiedere uno o l'altro
richiedendo qualcosa come:

qsub ... -lnodes=N:ppn=2:fsb800

ATTENTIONE: specificare sempre il numero di nodi da usare, senno' non
funziona correttamente.

PS: I nuovi processori hanno anche una cache di 1MB vs 512kB dei
precedenti, e supportano anche le estensioni intel EMT64.

 From now on CLX has other 128 nodes (256 CPUs) - ed now it has total
1024 processors.

The new processors (said Nocona) are ~30% faster than the previous ones,
even if their clock is slighlty slower (3.000 vs 3.055) because the
frequency of the front side bus is 800MHz instead of 533 as it is in the
previous ones.

For this reason you could observe unexpected speed-ups in your
applications. We do not think that this "mixing" could cause some slow-down.

However, if you need to make some precise benchmark, it is important to
know what kind of CPU you are using. For this reason we have defined the
"node types":

fsb533    for the old nodes
fsb800    for the new Noconas

Only for benchmark purposes then, you can request one or the other,
requesting something like:

qsub ... -lnodes=N:ppn=2:fsb800

ATTENZION: always specify the number of nodes to use, else it does not
work corretly.

PS: The new processors have also a cache of 1MB vs 512 of the old ones,
and have support for the extension EMT64.
